American Civil Liberties Union The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts is the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The organization is dedicated to defending freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, including freedom of speech, freedom from discrimination, and the right to due process. They are the most successful lobbying, communications and law organization in the United States dedicated solely to the protection of civil rights and liberties. Interns assist with screening phone calls, gathering information on cases, writing letters and preparing file summaries. Interns may also have the opportunity to attend Chapter Board meetings as well as School Board and City Hall meetings on issues relating to free speech. Because the office is very busy, interns need to be self-directed and able to take initiative. Possible independent projects include preparation of a hand-out outlining specific constitutional rights, or researching a specific case.
