Frequently Asked Questions Why do a gap year? Why should we consider Dynamy instead of going straight to college? Students who have just graduated from high school are often unsure of what interests they want to pursue in college. The internships, community involvement projects, and one-on-one advising provided through Dynamy, allows them to explore those interests and gain an understanding of what direction and field they want to pursue. College is a big investment and it makes sense to do everything possible to ensure that your child will make the best use of that investment- financially and otherwise. Dynamy can mean the difference between an average college experience and a great one. Students who choose to go to college after a Gap year often find that they are able to take better advantage of their experience as well as make the college years more efficient. What kinds of kids choose Dynamy Internship Year? Dynamy interns come from all over the country (and some internationally!) and have a wide range of backgrounds. Some were great students in high school but want to explore a different kind of education for a year, or need a break from academia. Others have had a difficult time with traditional schooling and are eager to show their strengths in an environment that works for students of all learning styles. Despite their different backgrounds, all interns share one thing- they are excited to test themselves in real world situations. They’re motivated to act on their own unique vision and convictions and have already recognized the need to take action in order to find the answers to their questions about life. They want to take ownership of their lives and are ready to become active members in their community. How is free time structured at Dynamy? It’s not! Although there are often events and outings planned by Dynamy Resident Coordinators and staff, free time activities are all optional. Many interns choose to explore Worcester; investigating the music scene, visiting the museums, or lounging in the many historic parks. Interns are given the freedom to plan their own off-time according to their interests. How will I know my child will want to go to college after Dynamy? We've found that students are so motivated and focused by their Internship Year that education takes on a new meaning. By seeking input from the professionals who they work with, they’ll see, first hand, the educational paths they can take to pursue their interests and hone their talents. When interns connect their education to a greater purpose, they find all the motivation they need to make the most of the tremendous investment in your future that college represents. Some interns find, however, that college is not the right ‘next step’ for them, and we encourage them to find out what is. Some interns have pursued apprenticeships leading into careers, enrolled in technical training programs, decided to travel, as well as taken a number of other unique paths. Our college and "future planning" counselor, Katelyn Gleason-Klapper, works hard to expose all the interns to the range and variety of educational opportunities available and provides guidance and support in planning those transitions. Is there an opportunity to get college credit, and will it transfer to other schools? Yes, if the intern wants to.
