Youth Academy
The Dynamy Youth Academy
(formerly the John S. Laws Institute), created in 1989, is an
experience-based, four-year, after-school leadership and mentoring college
access program.
The Youth Academy:
- Identifies
promising low-income 8th grade students in the Worcester public
schools
- Supports them
in completing their high school education
- Motivates and
prepares them for college and internships
- Upon
completion of the program, guarantees them access to higher
education
Through academic support,
advising and mentoring, class meetings, community meetings, internships,
leadership development and outdoor challenges, Dynamy Youth Academy is
designed to nurture responsible, socially aware young adults who will
participate in and appreciate the world around them. 92% of all Dynamy Youth Academy graduates
have attended college. Of those who graduated from high
school between 1992 and 1997, 62% earned a degree, and 14% were still in
college. Of those who graduated after 1998, 69% were currently enrolled in
college, and another 11% had plans to start next semester.
This
success rate compares significantly higher to the national averages,
particularly when considered in relation to the post-secondary attendance
rates of students from lower income family backgrounds and students
considered to be "at risk."
