Mission
Dynamy, Inc. is a not-for-profit experiential educational organization founded in 1969.
Our mission is to challenge, support, and empower young people to discover their purpose
in life and to practice their values.
Overview
Using internships, leadership training, and outdoor challenge Dynamy helps young people
increase their competence, confidence, and sense of connection to society.
Dynamy's Internship Year accepts
42 young people, ages 17 to 22, from across the country for a nine month long residential
program which includes full-time internships, an Outward Bound expedition, individual
advising, community service, group meetings and seminars, and optional college credit
seminars through Clark University. Students are high school graduates and some have
completed a year or two of college. Over 85% of Internship Year graduates go on to college,
with a high percentage pursuing higher degree levels. The program is funded through tuition,
with scholarships available for those in need.
Dynamy's Youth Academy accepts 13 talented but underserved
low income students entering their ninth grade year in the Worcester public high schools.
The Youth Academy is a four-year after school leadership and enrichment program that supports
and motivates young people to complete high school and attend college. Students participate
in internships, outdoor challenge trips, individual advising, academic enrichment activities,
community service, and weekly group meetings and workshops. All graduates are eligible for a
full-tuition scholarship from Colleges of Worcester Consortium institutions. This program is
funded through the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, and foundations.
New Initiatives
As Dynamy moves into the future with an energetic vision of education in action that
remains responsive to the emerging needs and opportunities of today's world, we want to reach
out and impact more young lives. As we strengthen and expand the Internship Year and the Youth
Academy, we are also moving forward with a national expansion plan. In 2005 Dynamy will open
a new site in Santa Rosa, California. Dynamy’s Internship Year program will begin enrolling
students for the spring term in Santa Rosa, California, beginning in January 2005. The Youth
Academy will enroll its first class in September 2005.
National research has repeatedly confirmed what Dynamy knows from 35 years of experience
and from the recent professional evaluation of the Youth Academy: Strong sustained relationships
with adults and multiple opportunities to learn by doing are among the most effective ways of
unleashing the innate capacity young people have to create successful lives in school and
beyond.
Dynamy has important insight and unique experience to contribute to the national conversation
about public education, youth development, civic education, equality of college access
opportunity, and workforce preparation among other current debates.
