Your
living arrangements, during your Internship Year, will combine the
best of both worlds. You'll be on your own, perhaps for the first
time in your life. You'll have to make decisions for yourself everyday,
but you won't have total responsibility for keeping a household
going.
In
this bridge year between home and the outside world, you'll share
an apartment with two to four other interns. (Men and women live
in separate apartments in co-educational buildings.)
You'll
be responsible for the cooking, cleaning, and otherwise expected
to do your fair share. But you'll also be given the freedom to structure
your own time.
Your
biggest hurdle, at least at first, may be discovering how to grocery
shop and prepare meals for yourself and/or the group. You'll be
living on a tight budget so you'll be forced to pick up new tricks
for eating well on less money than you may be used to. Equally important
will be learning to work with your roommates to create a living
environment that meets your varied needs. It's all part of learning
to take care of yourself and the people around you without someone
always telling you what to do.
But
there's a safety net during your Internship Year that you wouldn't
have if you were completely on your own. A resident manager and
a Dynamy staff member are assigned to each apartment building. They're
on hand to coach you on real life chores like getting around Worcester,
arranging for a telephone to be installed, opening a bank account,
or living with other people.
In
all, apartment living provides a natural and relaxed environment
for sharing the Internship Year.
